SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - House Speaker W. Ken Martinez is in line to run unopposed for re-election after a potential challenger withdrew.

Bluewater Democrat Nicole Lee Shult said Friday in a statement that she pulled out of the race because she had intended to file as a candidate in a different House district. However, she lives in Martinez’s district in northwestern New Mexico.

Shult said she supports Martinez, a Grants Democrat and lawyer who became the top House leader last year.

Martinez has served in the House since 1999. His late father, Walter, served as House speaker in 1971-78.

No Republican filed to run against Martinez earlier this week.
