FROSTBURG, Md. (AP) - Frostburg State University says it’s been approved to offer a 2-in-1 teaching certificate that is unique among Maryland colleges and universities.

President Jonathan Gibralter said Thursday that the dual certification covers both elementary and middle schools.

He says middle-school administrators historically have had to choose between teachers trained as either elementary generalists or secondary specialists.

The Frostburg State program balances an elementary teacher’s knowledge of educational development with a secondary teacher’s knowledge of particular subject. It also includes classes and field experience geared to middle-school students.

The program required approval from the University System of Maryland, the Maryland Higher Education Commission and the Maryland State Department of Education.
