GAFFNEY, S.C. (AP) - A former Gaffney police officer has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence in a 2011 crash that injured a friend.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports (https://bit.ly/1gwhXeM ) that 31-year-old Eric Mowery was also sentenced Thursday to three years of house arrest.

Authorities say Mowery was off-duty when he and William Boyce Peeler were drinking at a friend’s house. Prosecutors say Mowery was driving Peeler home when he hit a pothole, went off the road and struck a utility pole.

Peeler was taken to a hospital for leg injuries and had several surgeries. Mowery was hurt but was treated and released from the hospital and resigned the night of the crash.

Mowery apologized in court Thursday.
