MIAMI (AP) - The head of Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers has been held in contempt of court for defying a judge’s order to turn over a record.
Court records show that Crime Stoppers executive director Richard Masten was sentenced on Friday to two weeks in the county jail for refusing to turn over a record initially requested by a defense attorney in a cocaine case. But Miami Judge Victoria Brennan stayed her sentence until next week, allowing Masten to decide his next step.
Crime Stoppers promises confidentiality to people who provide tips about crimes. Attorney Ed O’Donnell says Masten is a man who is standing on principle in maintaining the confidentiality of tipsters. He says an appeal of the contempt order is possible.
