COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - State Rep. Bakari Sellers is complaining about most South Carolina election offices being closed on the first day candidates have to file for office.
State law sets the filing period as noon March 16 through noon March 30, with weekend office hours required only during the last 72 hours. That means state and county election offices will open 8 a.m. to noon March 29 and 30.
But state Election Commission spokesman Chris Whitmire says only Lexington and Spartanburg counties are choosing to open Sunday.
Sellers says all 46 counties need to keep office hours throughout the two-week period, and he’ll introduce legislation next week requiring it for future elections. The Democrat running for lieutenant governor says he didn’t realize it was an issue until Wednesday.
