JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The Alaska Senate State Affairs Committee moved a resolution calling for June 14 to be recognized as the 60th anniversary for the use of “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The resolution, sponsored by Republican Sen. John Coghill of North Pole, says the phrase “under God” was formally read into the congressional record on June 14, 1954. It was written earlier into the pledge on Feb. 10, 1954.
Coghill says he became aware of the anniversary too late to act on the February anniversary date and so adjusted his resolution to honor the first reading of the current pledge.
Coghill says 39 states have passed similar resolutions honoring the February date.
The resolution moves to the Senate Rules Committee.
