DETROIT (AP) - A University of Michigan professor and Ann Arbor composer is getting his second world premiere by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
The orchestra announced Wednesday that it will perform “Zodiac Tales” by Bright Sheng. The concerto for orchestra is scheduled to be performed at Orchestra Hall April 4-6.
The ensemble kicked off its current classical season in October with the premiere of Sheng’s violin concerto, “Let Fly.” It was part of a three-week series of Chinese-related programming by the orchestra that included a September performance featuring superstar pianist Lang Lang.
The San Francisco Opera announced earlier this year that it’s commissioned Sheng to compose an opera, “Dream of the Red Chamber,” for a 2016 premiere with an English-language libretto by David Henry Hwang. He won a Tony Award for “M. Butterfly.”
