PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A Portland police spokesman says a Multnomah County grand jury has indicted a 28-year-old man in the death earlier this month of a 2-year-old boy.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says the grand jury indicted Joshua Howard on Thursday on murder, murder by abuse and criminal mistreatment counts.

The child died March 6 at a Portland hospital. He had been found critically injured two days earlier at a motel. Police say Howard called 911 that night. Officers found the boy unconscious.

Simpson says the former Astoria man is the boyfriend of the child’s mother.
