SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A Utah measure to provide more meals at homeless shelters has advanced in the state Legislature.
The measure awaits a vote in the Senate after the House approved it Monday.
The proposal would do away with a requirement that workers dishing out meals at shelters must have a permit to handle the food.
Sandy Republican Rep. Steve Eliason sponsors the bill. He says current regulations have turned away potential volunteers from the Road Home in Salt Lake City.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1escg0M) the shelter has lost out on serving thousands of meals.
Eliason says volunteers at the shelters would still receive some training on food safety.
The bill must be approved by the Senate and signed by the governor to become law.
