SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A measure approving a move of a North Salt Lake medical waste-burning facility to a remote Tooele site has advanced in the Utah Legislature.

The Senate on Wednesday voted 27-1 to send the proposal to the governor.

A recent state study indicated that towns near the current Stericycle facility had higher cancer rates, but researchers have said the results are not definitive.

A group of Tooele County residents has since urged lawmakers to carefully consider the effects of moving the facility to their county.

Stericycle has said that it’s complied with regulations as it fights violations.

The Stericycle incinerator processes 7,000 tons of waste each year, including laboratory tools, human tissue and other waste.

The measure goes to the governor for a signature or veto.
