KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Protecting children from environmental threats is the focus of the latest talk in a southwestern Michigan series dealing with climate change.
Author and biologist Sandra Steingraber will speak Thursday evening at Kalamazoo College. She will read from her book, “Raising Elijah: Protecting Children in an Age of Environmental Crisis.” The scholar in residence at New York’s Ithaca College believes children face an environment more threatening to their health than previous generations.
The presentation, part of Western Michigan University’s Changing Climate Series, is free.
Steingraber leads a New York coalition concerned about the health effects of gas drilling by hydraulic fracturing, or fracking. In 2011, she received a Heinz Family Foundation award for writing about the link between toxic chemicals and diseases and for engaging the public as a cancer survivor.
