MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island group hoping to find the wreck of Capt. James Cook’s famous ship the Endeavour in Newport Harbor is planning to meet with an Australian museum official to discuss a potential partnership in the effort.
The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) that the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project is expected to meet in a few weeks with Kevin Sumption, director of the Australian National Maritime Museum.
The Endeavour is a part of Australia’s history, as Cook was sailing it in 1770 when he claimed the continent for Britain. The British explorer was killed in Hawaii by natives in 1779.
The Endeavour was renamed and sailed under another captain to Rhode Island, where it was scuttled by the British in 1778 as part of their blockade of Narragansett Bay.
