PHOENIX (AP) - Thousands of mourners packed a Peoria church for the funeral of a Phoenix police officer killed in a shootout with a wanted suspect last week.
Elected officials from throughout Arizona mixed with hundreds of police officers at Monday’s memorial service for 43-year-old Detective John Hobbs.
Dozens of people later lined sections of streets and freeway overpasses for the 10-mile procession to a graveside service in Phoenix.
Hobbs was shot March 3 and died hours later of his wounds at a Phoenix hospital.
The 21-year veteran was a member of the Phoenix Police Department’s Major Offenders Bureau, tasked with tracking down and arresting violent offenders and fugitives.
Hobbs’ unit earned an award from the police chief for overall outstanding work last year.
He left behind a wife and three young children.
