BEAUFORT, N.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Beaufort woman was scheduled to go to court on charges that she stole $70,000 from her mother and failed to pay for her care in an area nursing care facility.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports (https://bit.ly/1fQxRpf) 55-year-old Martha “Elizabeth” Loftin was to appear in Carteret County District Court on Monday on a charge of felony exploitation of an elderly person.

Beaufort police said the Carteret County Department of Social Services reported in December that Betty Loftin had been staying at an extended care facility in Sea Level since February 2011, but the facility hadn’t been paid.

Police said Elizabeth Loftin had power of attorney for her mother and was receiving her Social Security checks.

Elizabeth Loftin is in the Carteret County Jail under a $15,000 bond.
