STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) - Four suburban Detroit communities are considering a $200,000 study to determine if their fire departments should consolidate.

The Detroit Free Press reports (https://on.freep.com/1fPLBR5 ) the merger of departments in Sterling Heights, Mount Clemens and Macomb County’s Clinton and Harrison townships could be one of the biggest in the state. The county may help the communities in the study.

The consolidated departments would serve more than 250,000 residents and stretch across the middle of the county from Sterling Heights on the border of Macomb and Oakland counties to Harrison Township along Lake St. Clair.

The study would look at potential station sites, apparatus, staffing and cost savings.

State Fire Marshal Richard Miller says the communities are among a number of departments in the state that are researching the idea of consolidation.
