ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - An audit done by the New York state comptroller’s office has found that many high school students in New York City aren’t getting enough arts education.
The audit examined a sample of 310 New York City students who attended public high schools from 2007 to 2011.
It found that two-thirds of students didn’t receive arts education that met state guidelines.
The state education department requires instruction by a certified arts teacher for three hours a week for two semesters, or 108 hours during a school year. Schools are also required to have a state-approved arts syllabus, but about a third of the 166 audited schools didn’t.
Comptroller Tom DiNapoli says the education department should work with New York City high school officials to improve compliance.
