New York Rep. Charlie Rangel was seen tinkering away on his iPad during a live congressional debate against his challengers over the weekend.
“Congressman, are you Googling during this debate?” asked an incredulous moderator during the Friday debate on a local ABC affiliate.
“No, I just wanted to show them what he was picking out was consistent,” the Democrat responded.
The Daily Caller reports that Mr. Rangel pulled out the device after being confronted by challenger Adriano Espaillat on his voting record on finance laws.
“But it’s not fair, ’cause they don’t have theirs,” the moderator said of the iPad.
“Well, I was gonna show it to ’em, but you’re right,” Mr. Rangel said while putting the device away.
The debate got heated earlier when Mr. Rangel said about Mr. Espaillat: “Just what the heck has he actually done besides saying he’s a Dominican?”
Mr. Espaillat fired back and accused Mr. Rangel of framing the debate “among racial and ethnic lines.”
Rev. Michael Walrond, a third candidate also participating in the debate, chided his opponents for using “divisiveness as a strategy.”
“I think at some point we have to transcend the pettiness and divisiveness and put the people first,” he said, the New York Daily News reported
