It’s been a rough primary week for South Dakota Republican Senate hopeful Annette Bosworth.
Shortly after learning live on national TV that she had lost the primary to former Gov. Mike Rounds, Ms. Bosworth turned herself in to authorities to face charges of election fraud and perjury.
Ms. Bosworth, a Sioux Falls physician who learned of her loss from Fox News’ anchor Megyn Kelly, she turned herself in to the Minnehaha County Sheriff’s office, according to arresting office Sgt. Jason Gearman.
“We were requested by the Attorney General’s office to help take care of the warrant,” Sgt. Gearman said.
He added that the candidate was cooperative and has been released by the office on a personal recognizance bond.
She is accused of circulating petitions for her nomination while out of the country in the Philippines. Sgt. Gearman said she has been charged with perjury and that her case may include forgery claims.
“If she signed petitions, and the people weren’t there, [state Attorney General Marty] Jackley’s saying it’s a slam dunk, and that’s not the case,” former Bosworth campaign spokesman Lee Stranahan said. “There’s clearly no intent to defraud.”
Clayton Walker, an independent candidate, was also charged with violating state election laws, according to a warrant issued by Mr. Jackley.
