Dean Baquet, the executive editor of the New York Times who took over last month for ousted Jill Abramson, had a malignant tumor removed from his kidney Saturday, the newspaper said.
“I know this comes as we are all trying to move forward in the newsroom,” Mr. Baquet told the newspaper’s staff in an email on Monday morning. “I assure you that I will be back there as soon as possible.”
Mr. Baquet said doctors discovered the tumor Thursday and felt that it required “immediate attention.” He said he will spend about a week away from the office while recovering, the Times reported.
Mr. Baquet, 57, took the executive position last month after the abrupt termination of Miss Abramson, its first female executive editor.
