RAEFORD, N.C. (AP) - A Hoke County deputy has shot and killed a man.
Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said 33-year-old Sandy McCall died in the shooting around 2:30 a.m. in a neighborhood in Raeford.
The sheriff identified the officer who fired the shots as Sgt. Samuel Morant, who has worked for the sheriff’s office for eight years.
Peterkin says the shooting happened during an altercation as Morant investigated a suspicious person. The sheriff would not say why Morant though McCall was acting suspiciously or why his officer decided to fire his gun.
The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting.
