Rep. Peter King, New York Republican, said Friday that the president needs to be a better world leader in foreign affairs, especially his handling of a Malaysian Airlines being shot down over Ukraine on Thursday.

President Obama mentioned the incident, but then “went on to tell Joe Biden jokes” at a planned event in Delaware, Mr. King said.

“I can’t imagine Eisenhower, or Kennedy or Reagan doing that,” he said.

Mr. King said it’s not practical to put technology to protect against missiles on commercial planes, both because of high cost and because they’re not often shot down.

But he said this incident could reveal weak security some airlines still may have, especially those in Europe.

“This may be a wake up call to realize how vulnerable we still are,” he said.
