PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The mayor of Providence - and candidate for Rhode Island governor - is preparing to deliver his annual state of the city address.
Angel Taveras is scheduled to deliver remarks Wednesday evening in the city council chamber at city hall.
In last year’s address, the first-term Democrat focused largely on his progress in stabilizing the city’s finances, saying Providence had moved “from peril to recovery.”
Taveras became mayor of the capital in 2011. He announced in October he was seeking the Democratic nomination for governor. He cited his work addressing Providence’s fiscal problems and his background as the son of a working single mother.
Taveras is facing General Treasurer Gina Raimondo and Clay Pell, grandson of the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell, in the primary.
