SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has named Wesley Smith to represent the state’s interests in Washington, D.C.
The new director of state and federal relations takes the place of Robert Spendlove, who leaves after winning a seat in the Utah House of Representatives.
The governor in a statement praised Smith for his policy experience, calling him a good negotiator.
Smith leaves his post as an executive vice president at the Salt Lake Chamber after five years there.
He has worked for the Environmental Protection Agency and for the White House under George W. Bush. Smith was also a consultant for the Utah-based Exoro Group.
He graduated from Brigham Young University and holds a law degree from George Washington University.
Smith lives with his family in Cedar Hills.
