CHESTER, S.C. (AP) - A 25-year-old Chester man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after admitting he beat his cousin to death over a $180 debt.

The Herald of Rock Hill reports (https://bit.ly/1njdAdr ) that Anthony Isom pleaded guilty Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter just as testimony was ready to start at his murder trial.

Isom’s lawyer says his client was stabbed when he started to argue with 24-year-old Bradley McAteer in June 2012, and was defending himself when he beat his cousin and kicked him several times in the head.

Prosecutors say Isom left the house with $80 after the beating and went to Myrtle Beach with his girlfriend. He was arrested a few days later.

Charges were dropped against Isom’s girlfriend, Crystal Pardue, because authorities say she didn’t know about the beating.
