PHOENIX (AP) - Phoenix Fire Chief Bob Khan has announced he’s retiring next month to help care for his elderly father.
The 54-year-old Khan is a 31-year veteran of the fire department.
Khan says he will retire on Feb. 28 and he wants to spend time with his 82-year-old dad who has Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
Khan became chief in July 2006 after the retirement of longtime Fire Chief Alan Brunacini, who served in that role for 28 years.
Khan led efforts to enhance response times, adding fire stations and firefighters in growing areas.
He also is credited with reorganizing the fire department and introducing new technology to better dispatch personnel and equipment.
Khan says Executive Assistant Chief Kara Kalkbrenner will be named as acting fire chief.
