INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Jails and police across Indiana soon will be able to keep track of inmates while they’re still in prison, instead of only after they’re released.

The Law Enforcement Notification System released in 2007 allowed officers to register to receive email notifications about prisoners being released into their jurisdictions. The Indiana Department of Correction says the new system can provide customized notifications and geographic searches, including searches covering a specific zip code.

Police also can choose to receive release notifications about specific types of inmates, such as gang members or sex offenders.

The Department of Correction says 46 police agencies have registered for the service.
