EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Supreme Court has disbarred a once-prominent southwestern Illinois attorney serving a 12-year federal prison sentence on bankruptcy fraud and child pornography convictions.

The (Alton) Telegraph (https://bit.ly/1bwzCkt) reports the state’s high court booted 69-year-old Gary Peel from the legal profession.

The former Madison County man is serving his time in Lexington, Ky. on convictions related to his trying to blackmail his ex-wife with decades-old nude photos of her sister, who was 16 at the time.

Peel divorced Deborah Peel in 2003 and filed for bankruptcy in 2005. Authorities say he later approached his ex-wife, acknowledging a long-ago affair with her younger sister and telling her about risque photographs. Peel implied he might make the photos public if his ex-wife didn’t let him out of his financial obligations to her.
