MARYSVILLE, Wash. (AP) - An arbitrator has told the city of Marysville to rehire a police officer whose gun was used by his 3-year-old son to fatally shoot his 7-year-old sister.

Derek Carlile was fired in May of 2013 following an internal investigation into the March 2012 shooting. It happened while the children were left alone in a family van briefly stopped in Stanwood. Carlile left a .38-caliber revolver where his son could grab it.

A jury was unable to reach a verdict on a manslaughter charge in the death of his daughter Jenna.

The Marysville Police Officers Association filed a grievance over his firing.

A lawyer for Carlile, David Allen, told The Daily Herald https://bit.ly/Mbksel ) Tuesday an arbitrator ruled Carlile should get his job back.
