ATLANTA (AP) - The staff attorney for the state ethics commission has been terminated, nearly three weeks after a Georgia State Patrol trooper was called to the agency’s office on a report of an intoxicated state employee.

Commission Chairman Kevin Abernethy says commissioners made the decision to terminate Elisabeth Murray-Obertein during a Tuesday meeting. She had previously been on administrative leave since the Jan. 8 incident.

Murray-Obertein has been a key witness in a legal fight involving two former commission employees suing the agency and alleging retaliation for work investigating ethics complaints against Gov. Nathan Deal.

Murray-Obertein’s attorney Brian J. Sutherland says he and his client are disappointed by the commission’s action. When asked if a lawsuit was planned, Sutherland said his client is considering her options.
