WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Workers are trying to dry out and repair West Lafayette’s City Hall after a frozen water pipe ruptured.
Mayor John Dennis says the third-floor pipe froze over the weekend after a roof hatch was apparently blown open by strong winds.
Dennis tells the Journal & Courier (https://on.jconline.com/1f39aDb ) the water might’ve been flowing for 10 hours by the time it was discovered. By then, about 3 inches of water had pooled in the basement, along with an inch in the city council chambers. Other parts of the building have drywall and ceiling tile damage.
Officials say the damage might speed up plans for moving city offices to the Morton Community Center.
Dennis says he doesn’t know how much repairs will cost but expects insurance will pay for most of it.
