BALTIMORE (AP) - The Maryland Department of the Environment says a tool containing a small amount of radioactive material has been stolen in Baltimore.

Officials say the device, a Dynasil RMD LPA-1 analyzer, is used to measure concentrations of lead in paint. It was reported stolen Monday afternoon from a home in Baltimore, where it had been used during a property inspection.

MDE says the radioactive material is sealed and housed in a tungsten shield inside the instrument and can only be exposed when the device’s face is in contact with a surface.

Officials say the 3-pound device also has locks to keep its shutter from being opened.

The theft is being investigated by Baltimore police.
