DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A North Carolina prosecutor says he’s taking a new look at the case of a teenager who police say shot himself while handcuffed in the back of a patrol cruiser.
Durham County District Attorney Leon Stanback said Tuesday that he’s asked the State Bureau of Investigation to look into a tip in the case of 17-year-old Jesus Huerta (who-ER-tah). The DA agreed to resume the investigation after meeting with the SBI and the Huerta family’s attorney.
Police say evidence collected during their investigation indicates Huerta killed himself with a concealed pistol that a rookie officer failed to find when he frisked him.
The SBI’s original investigation went to Stanback this month. Stanback said he found no probable cause to believe a crime was committed and closed the case.
