ELKO, Nev. (AP) - Elko may be the next Nevada city to get into the drone business.
The Elko City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to allow testing of an unmanned aircraft system at the Elko Regional Airport.
Airport Director Mark Gibbs told the Elko Daily Free Press (https://tinyurl.com/kxbxmxn ) Elko’s airport was the only one in northeastern Nevada interested in becoming a test site.
If approved, the drones would use a 3,000-foot, crosswind runaway for takeoff and landing. Gibbs says the drones would have no effect on the roughly 3 percent of airport traffic that uses that runway.
Nevada is one of six states nationally recently selected to serve as U.S. drone test sites.
Testing already is planned at Bounder City, Desert Rock, Fallon and Stead just north of Reno.
