FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) - Fall River Mayor William Flanagan is set to officially swear-in career firefighter Robert Viveiros as the city’s new fire chief.

Viveiros is scheduled to take the oath of office Tuesday, just over three weeks after he become interim fire chief with the retirement of William Silvia.

Viveiros, who served as the deputy fire chief until his promotion, will manage a 215-member fire department and earn $136,000 annually under the terms of his 2-year contract, Flanagan said.

Viveiros was selected after scoring the highest marks among four candidates who took the civil service exam for the position, Flanagan said.

Fall River has one of the largest fire departments in the state that is responsible for protecting one of the most densely populated cities in Massachusetts, Flanagan said.

“The job of a firefighter is a very difficult job,” Flanagan said when asked to comment on what he hopes the new fire chief will bring to the city. “It is my hope that he will bring stability to the department, that he will have the confidence to lead firefighter and he will have the knowledge and skill to protect lives and property.”
