Boy, officer rescued after falling into icy pond

SYRACUSE, Utah (AP) - Police say a boy was rescued after falling through the ice of a Syracuse pond, but not after one of his rescuers also went down into the frigid, waist-deep water.

Authorities say Syracuse police Sgt. Stan Penrod responded to Jensen Pond around 5 p.m. Thursday to help the boy, who was about 11 years old.

But a rope Penrod tried to get to the boy was too short, and the officer fell through the ice himself when he tried to reach the child.

The boy was eventually rescued when a Unified police officer arrived with a longer rope and pulled both to shore.

Syracuse police chief Garret Atkin says the boy was taken to Davis Hospital for evaluation. Penrod was not injured.
