OAKDALE, La. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. William Jefferson has been transferred to a federal prison camp in Louisiana to continue serving a 13-year sentence for his convictions on corruption charges.
The Times-Picayune reports (https://bit.ly/1mCpTkA ) that Jefferson began serving his sentence at a low-security prison in Texas in May 2012 before his transfer to the Oakdale prison camp. The newspaper said prison officials didn’t immediately return phone calls on Tuesday seeking the date of his transfer.
Jefferson, a Democrat who represented New Orleans and surrounding suburbs, is scheduled to be released in August 2023 if he gets time off for good behavior.
Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards served part of his sentence for corruption-related convictions at the Oakdale facility before his release in January 2011.
