PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence officials are concerned that some urban students may be shut out of higher education because a new high school testing waiver doesn’t apply to students intending to go to the Community College of Rhode Island.

The state Department of Education created a waiver to the requirement that students pass the New England Common Assessment Program test to graduate from high school. The waiver applies to students admitted to colleges that aren’t “open enrollment” schools, because those schools assess students’ abilities.

CCRI is open enrollment, meaning there are no entrance requirements. But some of its programs require high school diplomas.

The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/LSTetA ) reports Providence officials worry that a lack of a waiver would prevent many students from attending CCRI and they’re asking the state to relax the rules.
