SAN DIEGO (AP) - A civilian construction supervisor accused of using his position to extort money from businesses seeking to work at Camp Pendleton has pleaded guilty to bribery and conspiracy.
U-T San Diego reports (https://bit.ly/LGtzUg) 65-year-old Natividad Lara Cervantes entered his plea Tuesday.
Cervantes, who referred to himself as the “Godfather at Camp Pendleton,” was arrested last year after authorities said he accepted $10,000 of a $40,000 bribe offered by a witness working with federal agents. The bribe was in exchange for helping a contractor receive a $4 million flooring contract at the base.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara Major set sentencing for April 18, when Cervantes faces a maximum term of 20 years in prison. He is free on $20,000 bond.
Cervantes and his attorney declined to comment Tuesday after the hearing.
