FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP) - The Long Island Rail Road is advising commuters in New York City to get an early start home as a snowstorm batters the region.
LIRR spokesman Sal Arena says extra trains are being added to the schedule as needed for the Tuesday evening commute.
He says a survey at Penn Station on Tuesday morning found an 8 percent drop in commuters as forecasters issued warnings that more than a foot of snow was expected.
The LIRR says it is possible that some service could be shut down if snowfall amounts start hitting the 10-13 inch range. But the spokesman says that is not a strict rule.
He warns commuters to pay attention for updated advisories.
Arena also said commuters should expect possible weather-related service disruptions on Wednesday.
