WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington could be getting a system that helps police locate gunshots quickly.

WDEL-AM reports (https://bit.ly/1i5i3Qg) that Councilman Mike Brown introduced a bill authorizing a three-year, $415,000 contract for a ShotSpotter gunshot locator system on Thursday.

Brown says the system uses a network of microphones around the city to help police locate gunfire more quickly. Police Chief Christine Dunning says the system could reduce the response time for gunshots and help locate incidents that might otherwise go unreported.

The public safety committee is expected to consider the contract next month.
