SOUTHAVEN, Miss. (AP) - While violent crimes, from homicides to rapes, dropped in Southaven in 2013, New Statistics show property crimes, including shoplifting and burglary, increased slightly.

The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/1hxxnT2 ) property crimes totaled 1,397 last year, compared to 1,377 in 2012.

Chief Tom Long says there were 27.9 property crimes per 1,000 residents in the city, compared to 28.5 property crimes per 1,000 residents nationally. In Mississippi, 28.1 property crimes per 1,000 residents were reported, and there were 63.3 per 1,000 residents in Memphis.



Violent crimes, which include aggravated assault, rape, homicide, robbery, kidnapping, sexual assault and carjacking, totaled 51 in Southaven in 2013. The previous year, 70 violent crimes were reported.
