JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - The Mississippi Supreme Court will consider an appeal from a Harrison County man convicted of murder in a 2009 fatal shooting.

The appeal from Harvill Payne Richardson Sr. is among dozens the court will consider during its January-February term. The Supreme Court will not hear oral arguments.

Prosecutors say Richardson was sentenced to life in prison in 2011 in the death of 55-year-old Rudy Quilon, who had been staying at the Richardsons’ home. Prosecutors say the two men were arguing in the backyard of the home on Old Mississippi Highway 67.

In his appeal, Richardson argued that the shooting was self-defense and occurred because he felt threatened by Quilon.

Prosecutors say in briefs that Richardson was the aggressor and provoked the incident.
