DETROIT (AP) - A family is seeking answers after an 88-year-old suburban woman died after being found on the ground following an apparent car crash in Detroit.

The Detroit Free Press reports (https://on.freep.com/1av9Pcc ) Lorraine McKaig of Livonia died at a hospital after being found Wednesday on Detroit’s east side.

Family members say McKaig usually drove several miles from her home each day to a restaurant for a meal, but on Wednesday a Livonia road was closed by a large fire. A Livonia police officer ticketed her for trying to drive through the barricaded section of road.

Livonia police spokesman Lt. Tom Goralski says the officer gave her an alternative route.

McKaig was found about eight hours later. Sue Modzelewski of Bloomfield Hills says police may have turned her mother in the wrong direction.
