PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A 23-year-old suburban Portland college student says he scooped up an envelope lying in a Safeway parking lot because he thought it was trash and planned to throw it away. When he looked inside, he found $2,000 in hundred-dollar bills and a cashier’s check for $38,000.
The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/QFm2eY ) that Brian DiCarlo also spotted a woman’s name on some paperwork. In his words, he “figured somebody must have had that money out for a good reason,” so he called the Clackamas County sheriff’s office last Friday and handed the envelope over to a deputy who arrived to fetch it.
Sharon Davis of Portland was carrying the envelope and some paperwork for a home she’s buying. She was frantic when she realized she’d dropped it. She searched the parking lot and called the sheriff’s office. The deputy located Davis and she was reunited with her money.
DeCarlo says the 71-year-old woman called him later to thank him for his honesty.
