A Beijing-bound flight leaving Newark Airport had to turn around Thursday shortly following takeoff after severe turbulence injured five flight attendants, officials said.

United Airlines Flight 89 returned about 45 minutes after it departed the New Jersey airport, according to the Port Authority, a local NBC affiliate reported.

Five flight attendants suffered from minor injuries and were taken to area hospitals.

No passengers were injured, the station said.
