PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence police say an officer left his personal handgun in his car when he sold it to a dealer last month, and now the weapon is missing.

WPRI-TV (https://bit.ly/1aFKznf ) reports that the officer, who was not identified, traded in his car just before Christmas.

Police Chief Col. Hugh Clements says the officer believes he left the gun in the car along with an old badge. He says the officer only recently realized they were missing.

Clements calls it a mistake and says he will discuss it with the officer.
