UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) - A D.C. man has been indicted on a charge of motor vehicle manslaughter after a car crash in which his 4-year-old son was killed.

The Prince George’s County State’s Attorney said Wednesday that 33-year old Charles Smith was also indicted on charges of child abuse.

Prosecutors say on May 9, Smith was driving in Cottage City with his son and 7-year old stepdaughter in the backseat. Authorities say as he approached an intersection, he drove into the southbound left turn lane and passed two vehicles while continuing into the northbound turn lane.

Prosecutors say Smith’s car hit two vehicles, mounted the curb, struck two utility poles, a tree and a brick retaining wall.

Smith’s son was ejected from the car and died. Authorities say Smith’s left arm was nearly severed.
