MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A search committee expects about 30 people to apply to be the next president of Minot State University in northern North Dakota.
Current President David Fuller is retiring in June. A presidential search committee will be whittling down the list of candidates to succeed him over the next few weeks, Chairman Terry Hjelmstad said.
Committee members on Jan. 22 will choose between eight and 10 candidates to further explore, and in early February they will invite five or six to campus for in-person interviews. The committee eventually will recommend three finalists to the state Board of Higher Education, which has the final say on presidential hires.
“By the end of February, we’ll have a decision,” Hjelmstad said.
Fuller in 2004 was named the eighth president of Minot State. The school that celebrated its 100th anniversary last year currently has about 3,500 students, and has experienced three straight years of enrollment declines. Fuller has cited Souris River flooding in 2011, a housing shortage caused by the western oil boom and high-paying jobs in the oil patch that are enticing young people who might otherwise attend college.
Hjelmstad said the committee is looking for a strong leader with a doctoral degree who has experience as a college president and some ties to the Midwest.
