BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois teen has been sentenced to five years in prison in connection with last summer’s hit-and-run death of a 9-year-old boy who was riding his bicycle.

A St. Clair County judge on Tuesday also ordered 18-year-old Kevin Powell of Washington Park to spend five years on post-prison supervised release. Powell will be credited with time already served in jail.

Powell pleaded guilty in November to reckless homicide in the death of Fabian Teason, who was struck by a vehicle last July while cycling near Cahokia. Fabian later died at a St. Louis hospital.

Prosecutors have dropped charges against Powell that accused him driving without a license, speeding and driving an uninsured vehicle.
