ALEXANDRIA, La. (AP) - All Rapides Parish Sheriff’s substations will be fully operational again when the South Alexandria substation reopens.

The Town Talk reports (https://townta.lk/JXQF8j ) the South Alexandria substation will re-open in a new location at the Pill Box Pharmacy on Wednesday.

“This is a perfect example of how private business and law enforcement can work together toward a common goal of a safer community,” Sheriff William Earl Hilton said.

After Chuck Wagner was elected sheriff in 2007 he cut substation staffs and centralized all dispatching from the courthouse in Alexandria. Residents could call the substation phone number, but a dispatcher at the Sheriff’s Office in the parish courthouse would answer and dispatch the call to the appropriate deputy.

Hilton, who served four previous terms as sheriff, returned to office in 2012.

The South Alexandria substation will handle the deputies assigned to the southeast parts of Rapides Parish, including the Poland, Echo, Lecompte and Cheneyville communities.

Hilton reinstated 24-hour operation and dispatching to the Boyce, Glenmora, Tioga and Deville substations in August 2012.
